Miss Universe 2010: Plastic Surgery Is OK

Filed in archive Beauty&Style , Wellness on August 28, 2010

The 2010 Miss Universe pageant winner Jimena Navarete expressed that she is in favor of plastic surgery, although she has not had any surgeries done to herself yet.

The twenty-two-year old beauty queen admitted this during a recent interview with the Cellestrellas website just before the pageant's coronation night.

The most beautiful woman in the world further said that she owes her figure solely to hard work at the gym, claiming she works out twice a day on a regular basis. While her very busy schedule with the beauty pageant does not spare her much time for the gym, she relies on weights that she was able to pack in her luggage.

While plastic surgery is allowed in the world's most prestigious beauty pageant, the subject has spawned a lot of controversy. Most people frown on finding out beauty queens have had surgical changes done. The former Ms. Universe winner from Venezuela - Dayana Mendoza - has admitted some work done on her nose and chest.

On the other hand, Ms. California USA Carrie Prejean found herself in a dispute over state pageant organizers regarding some money given to her for a breast enhancement procedure.

Contrary to many years of belief that exercise is contraindicated for cancer patients undergoing treatment, doctors are now saying that physical inactivity is the one to avoid. This is one of the national guidelines recently presented by the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

While it was believed that patients being treated for cancer should take it easy, evidence has now been gathered showing how physical activity is beneficial to cancer patients. Just as exercise is highly recommended for recuperating heart attack patients to strengthen the target organ, it has been found to trigger cancer cell death by a natural process called apoptosis.

Furthermore, exercise improves blood circulation which also improves immune cell circulation -- delivering these fighting cells efficiently throughout the body to kill viruses and disease causing substances.

Regular physical activity also reduces sugar levels which, in turn slows down the growth and spread of cancer cells. In cases of colon cancer, exercise not only lowers the levels of prostaglandins and bile acids that encourage cancer cell growth but also speeds up the elimination of waste thus, minimizing contact time with the colon's lining.

Breast Cancer Prevention Secret Diet Revealed

No need to guess anymore! Since obesity is one of the high risk factors for breast cancer, the secret of breast cancer prevention is a healthy overall diet. Good to know that this dreaded disease could still be prevented. Here are the basics of the breast cancer-free diet:

D- o not overcook meat, whether pan cooked or charcoal grilled. Instead, minimize the formation of cancer causing chemicals by marinating your meat and fish before cooking.

I - ncrease your calcium intake by eating dairy products that have low fat content. Not only do you prevent breast cancer but you also keep osteoporosis at bay.

E- at a lot of fresh veggies. Studies show that broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower stimulate production of the less potent form of estrogen while carrots, tomatoes, mangoes and cantaloupes supply your natural armor of beta carotene and lycopene -- both known cancer fighting substances.

T- ake your alcohol in moderation if you do not have a genetic predisposition to breast cancer. But if you do, take it out of your diet.

Remember, prevention is always better than a cure. Start the secret diet now!

How To Relieve Work-Related Stress

Filed in archive Exercise , Wellness on July 19, 2010

If you're feeling a bit stressed out at work, maybe you can try the following suggestions to make you feel better:

1. Finish the job you hate the most first. If there is a task you hate the most, try to have it done first. This way, when the job is done, your work day can only get better as it passes along.

2. Do some breathing exercises. Close your eyes, breathe in through your nose and breathe out through your mouth. Do this for one minute during the most stressful time of your work day. Use some imagination as you go through this exercise.

3. Try some aromatherapy. Just make sure it does not bother your coworkers and is not against your office's fire safety codes. A scented candle or an aromatherapy diffuser could help you perk up.

4. Do some stretching exercises. Try stretching your arms above your head. You will feel a little happier, calmer and more balanced

5. Do some squats. A set of 20-yes, 20!-squats in your office may improve your mood at work. It stimulates the release of growth hormones, which are natural mood enhancers.

The Truth Behind Five Workout Myths

Filed in archive Exercise , Wellness on July 15, 2010

The Truth Behind Five Workout Myths
© williamcho
Not everything you hear about working out is true. New studies about keeping yourself healthier are coming out everyday. Some of these studies have evidence that put into huge doubts, if not completely dispel, long-held physical fitness beliefs people have had for so many years.

Let's examine a few of them:

1. Cardio training is the way to go to lose more weight. This is not true at all. Recent studies have shown that strength training is much more efficient than steady-state cardio in burning calories. Thirty minutes of weight training can shed off as much calories as a six-minute-per-mile run over the same period of time, based on a study at the University of Southern Maine. Weight training also has the advantage of boosting metabolism after a workout and it builds muscles which will further increase fat-burning efficiency of your body over the long run.

2. Cellulite can be reduced through exercise. This is true. While exercise alone will not prevent the presence of cellulite, working out can diminish cellulite appearance. Keep in mind that cellulite is fat, so anything that allows you to burn more calories will make your skin look smoother. Do some strength-building exercises to tone muscles and make your body firm once more. Focus on exercises that work out your hips, quads, and hamstrings, but don't ignore other muscle groups as well.

3. The best way to get perfect abs is to do a lot of crunches. This is not true. Crunches work out only the surface muscles in the abs, and ignores the ones further within. A better way to nice abs is to include moves like the plank and side plan. These will work out areas of the core that we seldom pay attention to. You also need to pay attention to your glutes so that the stomach isn't pushed out. So work out your butt as well.

4. Physical activity improves your memory. This is true. Exercise makes brain cells more ready to make connections between different ideas and therefore, enhances retention of what we learn. It also teaches us to be more focused, calm, and motivated, making our minds bettered equipped for learning. And regular exercise can also increase production of new stem cells that grow into new brain cells. In general, more complicated physical activities like playing tennis result into more developed brain cells.

5. You get the best results from your exercise if you do it in the morning. Not true at all. If you have to choose the time of day to engage in physical activities, late in the afternoon would be best. That's because muscle strength and body temperature are both at their peak between 4 and 6 pm. This means you are able to do your workout with a bit less effort. The food you ate from breakfast till lunch serves as fuel for your workout later in the day. However, if you have to stick to a morning or late evening schedule for your work out, then by all means do so. It doesn't really matter too much when you work out, as long as you work out.
